Exploring the Link Between Mindset and Self-Awareness in Leadership

The significance of self-awareness extends beyond personal growth; it is integral to effective leadership. Research shows that leaders with heightened self-awareness make informed decisions, manage conflicts adeptly, and foster team collaboration. Embracing self-awareness also enhances emotional intelligence, enabling leaders to maintain focus, reduce stress, and act decisively under pressure.

With our focus on mindset development, we’ve been curious about the relationship between a leader’s vertical mindset stage and their level of self-awareness. Our latest insights series report investigates this relationship, analyzing data from 81 leaders who engaged in Adeption’s Vertical Mindset Indicator (VMI) and 360-degree assessments at the start of a leadership development program. This study categorizes leaders into Early Stage and Late Stage groups based on their vertical mindset scores and evaluates their self-perceived versus peer-rated leadership competencies.

Our findings not only reveal interesting differences between these groups in several leadership competencies, but that leaders operating from later mindset stages often possess heightened self-awareness, more accurately aligning their self-perception with external evaluations. This research underscores that cultivating self-awareness enables leaders to act with authenticity and social competence, empowering them to harness their strengths and address areas for improvement.
